Clonmellon – Killallon Parish is located on the border of Westmeath and Meath.
Our Parish is bounded by the sister parishes of Athboy, Delvin, Collinstown, Oldcastle, Kilskyre and Kells .
Our Parish has two churches – Sts. Peter and Paul, Clonmellon and the Church of St. Bartholomew , Killallon.
Clonmellon National School serves our parish and the surrounding area.
Previously our parish had a number of smaller schools in the townlands of Cloran, Killallon, Geehanstown, Rosmead and Archerstown together with the boys and girls national schools in Clonmellon.
Clonmellon village was established in 1837 following the removal of sections of the original village (approx. 1767) by the ruling Chapman family (Killua Castle) and the reconstruction of the Village to suit their needs. The church was built c.1808 and is among the few buildings that were retained when the village was redesigned. The freestanding belltower to southwest was added c.1830. It was built c. 1830, an unusual feature and is a reminder of political conditions in Ireland prior to Catholic Emancipation in 1827 when the Catholic Church was not permitted to use bells for worship.
The village is well known for it’s distinctive broad tree- lined Main Street.
1837 was also the year that the current St. Bartholomew’s Church in Killallon was built. It is likely that the current church is the fourth church at the site. The church is sited benefitting from beautiful countryside views.
During the now infamous Covid 19 period, Killallon church with it’ s large carparking facility was used by the parish to continue both the Sunday Masses and thus enhance the faith history of the our parish.
The Parish currently boasts two castles Ballinlough Castle, and Killua Castle.
Our Parish thankfully enjoys contributions from many local groups working together to create a vibrant community , all of which provide a very positive environment.
